Ninni Baeckstrom

Ninni Baeckstrom grew up in Sweden and has been a part of the Charlottesville arts community for the past 30 years, teaching and exhibiting her sculptures. Her public art sculptures, purchased by the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, are installed in the area, and her work can be found in institutional and private collections throughout the US and Europe.

As an avid hiker, Ninni draws inspiration from what she sees on the trail—gnarly roots, the texture of a sycamore tree, or a heron fishing in the river. Her work deeply explores the human experience and organic forms. Over the years, she has worked in cement, clay, wood, and metal, often combining these materials to create original pieces that touch the primordial. Her current stoneware creations incorporate slips, oxides, glazes, and various mixed media components, brimming with whimsical creativity.
