My pottery is primarily wheel-thrown, then decorated with colorful underglazes. It is fully functional – water-tight, food safe, microwave and dishwasher safe. Some pieces are mainly decorative (such as the vases and planters) whereas others can be used every day for serving food.
For some time, I have been exploring decorating with banding – using vibrant colored underglazes and adding color as the piece turns on the wheel. I enjoy experimenting with different color combinations. For some pieces I apply underglaze to leather hard clay then use sgraffito tools to carve designs.
My decorative pieces are fired to maturity without a clear glaze to preserve the matte appearance. Bowls, mugs and plates for food use are glazed with a clear or celadon glaze before the final firing. All my pieces are fired to cone 5.
