Lynda Filbert

Lynda Filbert, retired from Towson University, Baltimore, Md, is a sculptor based in Charlottesville whose artistic practice is deeply rooted in the celebration of the female form and the narrative of human evolution. Drawing on her background in gymnastics, Filbert brings a sense of balance and physical intuition to her mixed-media figures, qualities that resonate throughout her work. Filbert combines clay sculptures with materials such as fabric and jewelry, using raku, gas, and pit firing to give her sculptures an aged, weathered quality. These processes impart surfaces that evoke a weathered, ancient character, while remaining relevant to contemporary sensibilities. Choosing to eschew political commentary, Filbert’s focus remains on the grace found in the human story. Through her work, she creates forms that feel simultaneously ancient and modern, inviting viewers to reflect on the enduring nature of our shared humanity.
