Katie Maloney

Growing up on my family’s farm in Tidewater Virginia, I observed and interacted daily with the natural world. My animal ceramics intends to share this personal connection to landscape and encourage my audience to remember wild spaces. I sculpt animals who are presented in gestures of quiet significance, invoking introspection about our relationship to animals, nature, and each other. Many of my pieces include a vessel, which I have often wheel thrown, altered, and carved to integrate with the animal form and become functional in the domestic setting. I enjoy using multiple types of clay, glazing, and firing methods with a primary focus on cone six oxidation and cone ten wood firing. These methods add variation to my clay surfaces, helping to achieve that fascinating moment where symmetry and randomness are one.
