Jan Elmore
Native wood species and hammered copper are the primary components of the wall mounted sculptures I create. Colored glass has been introduced in a new collection of designs to lend additional vibrancy, depth, and visual texture to the work. Many wood pieces I use are offcuts passed along by local cabinetmakers.
Principles embodied in the work are to:
feature the natural characteristics of wood and metals in combinations that express compelling designs and thematic concepts,
emphasize and enhance the beauty of the materials,
reuse materials that otherwise might be discarded, and
generate as little waste as possible.
Additional elements that may be integrated into the artwork include my own hand-painted papers, porcelain, leather, fibers, aluminum, paint, and acrylic stucco. All sculptural elements are designed, cut, sanded, patinated, hammered, oiled, fired, or painted by my hand.
