Jan Elmore

Native wood species and hammered copper are the primary components of the wall mounted sculptures I create. Colored glass has been introduced in a new collection of designs to lend additional vibrancy, depth, and visual texture to the work. Many wood pieces I use are offcuts passed along by local cabinetmakers.

Principles embodied in the work are to:

  • feature the natural characteristics of wood and metals in combinations that express compelling designs and thematic concepts,

  • emphasize and enhance the beauty of the materials,

  • reuse materials that otherwise might be discarded, and

  • generate as little waste as possible.

Additional elements that may be integrated into the artwork include my own hand-painted papers, porcelain, leather, fibers, aluminum, paint, and acrylic stucco. All sculptural elements are designed, cut, sanded, patinated, hammered, oiled, fired, or painted by my hand.
