Sometimes Holly Horan throws pots on the potter’s wheel, but more and more she hand-builds with rolled-out slabs of clay to make functional pottery. She decorates her pieces with carving, as well as slip-trailing decorative patterns and animal imagery onto the pots with liquid clay.

Holly and her husband, John Pluta, own Noon Whistle Pottery in Stanardsville, Virginia, which represents more than 200 American artisans. They also organize The Virginia Clay Festival.
