Fred Williamson
I turn greenwood bowls on my homemade lathe, featuring local hardwoods. Each bowl begins as a section of a log chain-sawn to rough size and screwed onto a faceplate. I strive to highlight distinctive details in the wood, such as grain, knots, holes, burls, or spalting, which often determine the final shape. This lends spontaneity to the experience. I turn simple shapes with a connection to ancient pottery designs. I feel I am revealing the intrinsic beauty and soul of a tree as my gouge slices shavings away, leaving a thin curve of wood that is sanded smooth and brought to life by the finish.
