“Kyle Lucia and Johannah Willsey of Phoenix Handcraft bring the ancient arts of blacksmithing and mosaics to a contemporary audience. Using hand tools and early industrial equipment, we create modern designs with the timeless feel of handmade work. Our work shows the continuing relevance of hand skills even in the ever-advancing technological era of the 21st century.

At Phoenix Handcraft, we use local, durable, non-toxic, and reclaimed materials to create environmentally sustainable work. We place a strong emphasis on community outreach and collaboration, working with local artist friends and community arts groups.

Kyle learned blacksmithing through a traditional English apprenticeship. He later earned a BFA in furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Johannah is a self-taught mosaic artist. She has a BA in art history from the College of William & Mary. Though we happily work independently, our favorite projects bring it all together: metal, mosaic, and wood.

Together, we are raising (and homeschooling!) our two children, two young cats, and one handsome dog, in beautiful, historic Richmond, Va. When we aren't in the studios, you can usually find us exploring the James River or digging in our backyard garden.”
